Senior Living in Alexandria Speaker Series

Senior Services of Alexandria’s Senior Living in Alexandria Speaker Series is a free educational program offered from September through June, designed to help older adults and caregivers stay informed, connected, and engaged.

Each session features local experts discussing topics that matter most to Alexandria’s senior community — including health and wellness, legal and financial planning, housing options, transportation, and caregiver resources.

SSA develops each program in close partnership with City of Alexandria agencies, nonprofits, and community organizations to ensure that presentations provide the most current and accurate information. Attendees can also visit resource tables hosted by local partners to learn more about available services and support in the community.

The 2025–2026 Senior Living in Alexandria Speaker Series schedule is now available.

Senior Ambassador Program

The Senior Ambassador Program empowers volunteers to serve as trusted messengers in their communities, helping older adults stay informed about the programs, resources, and services available throughout the City of Alexandria.

Senior Ambassadors share information about nutrition, transportation, education, and companionship programs, and help connect neighbors with the support they need to age safely and independently. Ambassadors choose how and when to share information, making this a flexible volunteer opportunity that fits any schedule.

SSA provides a short training session, materials, and ongoing support to help Ambassadors feel confident representing Senior Services of Alexandria at community events, apartment buildings, faith centers, and neighborhood gatherings.

If you’re passionate about helping seniors in your community, consider joining this rewarding program.

Senior Law Day

Senior Law Day is an annual program co-presented by the Alexandria Bar Association and Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA) as part of the Senior Living in Alexandria Speaker Series. The event brings together legal, financial, and healthcare experts to provide practical information on the issues that matter most to older adults and caregivers in our community.

The 2025 Senior Law Day, held on June 7, 2025 at First Baptist Church, focused on “The Cost of Aging: Mental, Physical, Financial, and Legal Perspectives.” Attendees heard from estate planners, financial advisors, and senior resource specialists who shared insights on caregiver challenges, healthcare and housing costs, and the essential legal documents everyone should have in place.

Planning is now underway for the 2026 Senior Law Day, which will once again offer valuable guidance and free resources to help Alexandria’s seniors and their families prepare for the future with confidence.

Senior Academy

The Senior Academy is a collaborative program between Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA) and the City of Alexandria designed to help residents aged 60 and older learn more about how their local government works and how to get involved in the community.

Held each September, the Senior Academy offers interactive sessions with City leaders, department representatives, and nonprofit partners, giving participants an inside look at how Alexandria operates—from public safety and housing to transportation, recreation, and human services. The program also introduces seniors to the many resources and volunteer opportunities available to help them stay informed, connected, and active in civic life.

The Senior Academy is offered annually and is free to Alexandria residents. Each session includes presentations, tours, and discussions with City staff and community organizations.

For more information or to be added to the interest list for the next Senior Academy, contact Lindsay Hemphill at admin@seniorservicesalex.org or call (703) 836-4414 ext 110.
