Volunteering

Volunteering your time is one of the most meaningful ways to give back to your community and few causes are more impactful than helping our seniors.

Older adults are the heart of Alexandria, the parents, grandparents, neighbors, and mentors who built the community we cherish today. Yet many now face challenges such as isolation, limited mobility, and access to food or resources. By volunteering with Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA), you can make a direct difference in their lives every day.

Since SSA’s founding, volunteers have been the driving force behind our mission. They deliver meals, make friendly visits and calls, assist with grocery deliveries, support events, and help seniors stay connected and independent. Working alongside our dedicated staff, SSA volunteers bring compassion, dignity, and hope to hundreds of older adults across the city.

Join us and become part of a community that ensures every senior feels valued, supported, and never forgotten.

Groceries to Go Volunteers

Groceries to Go is one of Senior Services of Alexandria’s most personal and rewarding volunteer opportunities, helping older adults who love to cook but have difficulty shopping safely or regularly. The program ensures that seniors can maintain independence, access healthy food, and enjoy the comfort of cooking at home.

Volunteers play a vital role in this process. Twice a month, volunteers:

  • Call participating seniors on the Tuesday before delivery to take individualized grocery orders.

  • Deliver groceries on Thursday between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM directly to each senior’s home.
These deliveries are more than just about groceries — they’re moments of connection, kindness, and reassurance for older adults who look forward to seeing a friendly face.

The time commitment is twice a month for about 2–3 hours, and SSA provides personalized, 30-minute training to ensure volunteers feel confident and supported. Volunteers must also complete a background check (with a $25 fee) and are encouraged to commit to at least six months of service.

If you’re looking for a way to make a tangible difference in a senior’s life — one phone call, one delivery, one smile at a time — consider joining SSA’s Groceries to Go volunteer team.

Friendly Visitor & Friendly Caller Programs

Senior Services of Alexandria’s (SSA) Friendly Visitor and Friendly Caller programs bring companionship and connection to seniors who may feel isolated or live alone without nearby family or friends. These programs are designed to reduce loneliness, build meaningful relationships, and remind older adults that they are seen, valued, and cared for.

Through the Friendly Visitor Program, volunteers are matched one-on-one with a senior for weekly in-person visits — spending about an hour together sharing conversation, laughter, stories, or even a cup of coffee. These visits often grow into lasting friendships that brighten the lives of both the volunteer and the senior.

The Friendly Caller Program offers a flexible way to connect by phone, providing ongoing check-ins and friendly conversations tailored to the senior’s needs and schedule — from a quick 2-minute hello to a 20-minute chat about their day.

Both programs offer volunteers a simple yet deeply rewarding way to make a real difference in a senior’s life. A small amount of time each week can bring comfort, friendship, and joy to someone who needs it most.

Information and Education Outreach Volunteers

Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA) provides valuable information about services, activities, and resources for Alexandria’s older adults community through our Senior Information Corners, located in city libraries, major recreation centers, continuing care facilities, and senior residential communities.

These information corners make it easy for older adults and caregivers to find trusted, up-to-date resources on health, nutrition, housing, transportation, and community programs — all in one convenient place.

We’re looking for volunteers who can help keep these information corners stocked and organized throughout the city. This opportunity is flexible and easy to fit around your schedule — a perfect option for those who want to contribute to the community in a meaningful yet low-commitment way.

SSA also welcomes bilingual volunteers who can provide translation or interpretation support, helping us reach Alexandria’s diverse senior population more effectively.

If you’re passionate about helping others stay informed, connected, and supported, this is a great way to make a difference!
