Transportation Program (DOT Paratransit Call Center)

Since 1984, the City of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation (DOT) has partnered with Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA) to operate the Paratransit Call Center—a collaboration that ensures safe, reliable, and accessible transportation for more than 1,000 Alexandria residents living with mobility challenges or developmental conditions.

DOT Paratransit provides Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant, curb-to-curb taxi service, seven days a week, for residents who find it difficult or are unable to use public transportation. Each year, the program serves over 1,500 registered clients and provides more than 50,000 rides throughout Alexandria and nearby areas.

All trips within the City of Alexandria and to/from the Pentagon are fare-free. For destinations outside city limits, the one-way fare is $4.00 for trips up to five miles and $6.00 for trips over five miles. DOT also provides service to Arlington, Fairfax County, and Washington, D.C.

To better serve Alexandria’s growing Spanish-speaking community, SSA has added two bilingual team members to its reservations staff. In addition, riders can now take advantage of a new self-service booking option through the Alexandria DOT mobile app, making scheduling rides easier and more convenient for tech-savvy users. At the same time, SSA continues to provide personalized phone assistance for individuals who need extra support.

From processing applications to providing friendly customer service, SSA’s Transportation staff ensure that every client receives the care and assistance needed to travel safely and confidently.
