Transportation Program

DOT Para-Transit provides safe, reliable, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant, curb-to-curb taxi service, seven days a week for residents of Alexandria who find it difficult, or are unable, to use public transportation.

DOT does not charge for one-way trips within the City of Alexandria. For trips up to five miles outside the City limits, the one-way fare is $4.00. DOT’s one-way fare for trips over five miles outside the City of Alexandria is $6.00. DOT drives to Arlington, Fairfax County, and Washington, D.C. This service has over 1,500 registered clients and provides over 50,000 rides annually.

Senior Services’ reservationists schedule rides for clients in coordination with the City of Alexandria and Diamond Transportation. Call (703) 836-5222 for reservations.

Note – As of October 1, 2017, all DOT Para-Transit clients were able to ride the DASH bus for free. Find more information here.

As of January 1, 2022, trips within the City of Alexandria and to/from the Pentagon are free.

Senior Taxi Yellow Card

As of Monday, July 1, 2013, reservations for the Alexandria Senior Taxi service were to be made directly with Yellow Cab. To obtain a discounted fare, Seniors must enroll for the new program directly with the City of Alexandria Division of Aging and Adult Services at (703) 746-5697 to obtain the new Senior Taxi Yellow Card. If you did not have a Senior Taxi Yellow Card as of July 1, 2013, you will be expected to pay full fare for taxi service.
