Alexandria Commemorates the 75th Anniversary of D-Day
Large Event Planned at 1 King Street, Waterfront Park on June 1, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Alexandria Caen Sister City in collaboration with the Office of Historic Alexandria honors the 75th Anniversary of D-Day with a large commemorative event in the new Waterfront Park. Celebrate American and French cultures and U.S. military history with this fun event for the whole family. The day includes children’s activities, WWII reenactors, live music, food and a wine garden!
This year marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day. On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops invaded Normandy, France, gaining a significant foothold in continental Europe. While more than 9,000 Allied soldiers were lost during the invasion, it directly led to the Allied victory over Hitler and the Axis Powers.
This year’s event will be held at the new Waterfront Park North at 1 King Street, Alexandria, Virginia, Saturday, June 1st, 2019, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. Food and beverages will be available for purchase in the French market and wine garden. Wine and Design will be hosting a paint and sip station at select times, advance ticket purchase available at https://wineanddesign.com/calendars/alexandria. There will be history booths, children’s activities, live swing music and dancers from 11 a,m,-1 p.m., and a fife and drum corps and pipe and drum corps later in the afternoon.

The City of Alexandria has shared a Sister City relationship with the city of Caen since 1991. Caen is the capital of Normandy and was devastated in the fighting after D-Day-73% of the city was destroyed. Today, Caen and Alexandria enjoy cultural, educational, and economic cooperation. Throughout the year ACSCC also organizes exchange programs, lectures, children’s programs, and additional events to promote our French-American relationship.
