In partnership with Giant Foods and Harris Teeter, Senior Services of Alexandria provides a much-needed grocery delivery program to seniors who are 60+ living in the City of Alexandria. Through the Groceries to Go Program, screened volunteers deliver groceries to seniors every other Thursday year-round. Groceries are ordered based off the grocery recipient’s personal shopping list. Volunteers call program recipients to get their individual orders on the Tuesday before the scheduled Thursday delivery date. There are no minimum order requirements and no delivery fee.
Volunteers deliver groceries between 10:30 am to Noon to the client’s home and if requested to do so, will put groceries away and loosen any tight-fitting lids. Through this program, SSA volunteers provide a vital link to the community and outside world for seniors who otherwise have limited mobility. This program is an important addition to SSA’s larger “Senior Nutrition Program” with the intent of increasing senior safety, health and nutrition.
To be eligible, you must be a resident of the City of Alexandria, be at least 60 years old, and have a debit or credit card. If you or someone you know is interested in the Groceries to Go Program, contact Sandy Freedman at (703) 836-4414, ext. 119 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also download a flyer about the program by clicking G2G.
If you would like to volunteer to make a difference in a senior’s life or know of a senior who could benefit from the Groceries to Go Program, please contact SSA directly at (703) 836-4414, ext. 119 or email email@example.com. All volunteers receive an individualized, one-hour training by SSA staff. We would like a six-month commitment from volunteers.
