November Speaker Series on Employment & Volunteer Opportunities was a Great Success!
SSA, co-sponsored this event with Volunteer Alexandria and JobLink, welcoming over 90 seniors to the Charles Beatley Central Library to learn about employment and volunteer opportunites available in Alexandria. The takeaway was that there are numerous opportunities.

2013 Senior Law Day on "How to Avoid Being Scammed" was a Great Success!
SSA and the Alexandria Bar Association welcomed over 100 people to the annual Senior Law Day event on "How to Avoid Scams--Don't be a Victim!" Several local experts provided information and tools on how to protect yourself and loved ones from being victims of scams. The powerpoint presentation available below has a lot of useful information and tips as well as a video from a senior sharing his story about being scammed and the toll it took on his life. Debut of SSA's "Senior Living in Alexandria" Television Show
Be sure to check out SSA's new 30-minute broadcast, "Senior Living in Alexandria." It is a monthly program that will air on Alexandria's Channel 70 every Sunday at 2:00 pm as well as on Arlington Cox Cable Channel 69 on Thursday at 4:30 pm; Saturday at 6:30 pm and Sunday at 1:30 pm. The show will feature guests talking about issues important to seniors, as well as cooking demos and highlights from our monthly speaker series. To watch the program click here.
TC Williams High School National Honor Society Delivers Meals!
A special thanks to the TC Williams High School National Honor Society for volunteering to deliver meals to Alexandria's seniors. They also delivered staple food bags donated by the local Fraternal Order of Eagles, #871. Students volunteering include Gloriya Mavrova, Abby Bolton, Gianna Knutson, Parker White, Leia Moran, Spenser Gilliand, Carter Goodwin (in front row of photo L-R). SSA Names Mary Lee Anderson as Executive Director
Mary Lee Anderson was recently named as Executive Director for SSA. She started with SSA in 2010, serving as the Director of the Resource Center, which oversees the Senior Speaker Series and Friendly Visitor Program - two very popular SSA services. She has been involved in service to the Alexandria non-profit community for over 30 years, and 20 years in the corporate telecommuncations field. SSA is very fortunate to have to have her at the helm. To read more click here.

Friendly Visitor Volunteers: SSA's Friendly Visitor program matches seniors with members of the community with the goal of relieving loneliness for seniors who don't have family or friends in the area. If you would like to make a difference in a senior's life, volunteer to be a friendly visitor. The time commitment is once a week for about an hour. Meals on Wheels Volunteers: SSA is now delivering meals to Alexandria seniors 7 days a week! We are looking for volunteers to deliver meals on weekdays, Saturdays,Sundays. For more information on time requirements, etc. contact SSA at 703-836-4412, ext 12. or email email@example.com.
