2014 Senior Law Day

Thanks to everyone who made this year's Senior Law Day such a great success! Over 100 attendees heard from two panels of experts about the importance of early Estate Planning and Long-Term Care. Oktoberfest 2014

SSA thanks its supporters for a great turnout at Oktoberfest hosted by Port City Brewing Company. The proceeds from the event will benefit senior programs including Meals on Wheels, Friendly Visitor and Information and Education Outreach. To see photos from the event click on Oktoberfest.

Shop at Reunions and Support SSA

During the month of October, Reunions, a specialty gift shop located in the Fairlington Shopping Center off Quaker Lane, will donate 5 percent of all profits to Senior Services. There will be a special SSA shopping evening at Reunions on October 23, 6-8 pm. Get a jump on your holiday shopping! Proceeds will go to supporting and expanding SSA's programs including Meals on Wheels, Friendly Visitor and its Information and Education Outreach Programs.

Senior Living in Alexandria October Show

The October Show is now on Youtube and will air Sundays at 2:00 pm. This month's program features an interview with Robert Blancato, AARP's Virginia State President talking about long-term health care; cooking segment with Chef Hans; highlights from the September Speaker Series on "Senior and Their Pets," and an interview with Lt. Col. Tom Christianson talking about an upcoming World War I event in early November. To view click on Senior Living.

Robust Walkathon

Ben Brenman Park was the site of the first Robust Walkathon sponsored by the City of Alexandria's Successful Aging Committee to benefit three senior events during the year--Dance for All Ages, Senior Health & Fitness Fair and Senior Holiday Party. Dr. Dan Kulund, creator of the Robust Waking movement, introduced participants to this unique way of walking that weaves low-intensity exercises intended to help seniors gain balance, strength, agility, flexibility and endurance while walking. Volunteers Honored at Annual Luncheon

SSA held its Volunteer Annual Luncheon hosted by The Fountains at Washington House for Meals on Wheels and Friendly Visitor volunteers. Special recognition went to Meals on Wheels volunteers John Smucker and Robert Bussler for their combined 60 years of service. Friendly Visitor volunteers Toni Dawsey and Bonny O'Neil were honored for their commitment to the program since its inception in 2012. For more photos from the luncheon click on Volunteer Luncheon.

Seniors and Their Pets

SSA cosponored a Speaker Series event with the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria about Seniors and Their Pets. Presentations included information about the Senior Pet Program and Adopting a Pet, AniMeals on Wheels, Keeping your Pet Heathly and Losing a Pet - Process of Grieving. Senior Living in Alexandria

The September 2014 is now on Youtube. Just click on Senior Living. This month's program features the last segment of the summer's "Financial 101" series, making creative, healthy salads with Chef Hans and "In the Community" with the Alexandria Recreation Department. 2014 Young At Art!

The Young At Art Exhibition officially opened with an Awards Ceremony and Reception at the Durant Arts Center at 1605 Cameron Street in Alexandria. Volunteers Needed for AARP Foundation Tax-Aide

Volunteers are needed to help residents prepare and file their 2014 returns next year. Join a dedicated corps of volunteers for the 2014 tax season. Training is provided in December and January 2015. For more info visit taxaide or call 1-888-227-7669.

Volunteers Needed to Assemble Go-Kits for Seniors

Volunteer Alexandria is looking for volunteers to assist in assembling 250 emergency preparedness Go-Kits on Saturday, Oct. 25, 9 - 11 am. Kits will be distributed to seniors in the City of Alexandria. To register go to

Wright to Read Volunteers Needed

Jewish Community Center of No. VA Presents Global Warming: What you Really Need to Know!

Philip Wirdzek, Int'l Institute for Sustainable Laboratories will lead an interactive program on the scientific, political and social aspects involved with global warming. Robust Walking Group - Waterfront Walkers of At Home in Alexandria meet at TC Williams Boathouse at the foot of Madison Street every Tuesday morning at 8:30. The Market Squares gather at the Wiley Mitchell Pavilion in front of City Hall every Thursday morning at 9 am. The events are FREE and open to all!

Additional Volunteer Opportunities

Friendly Visitor Volunteers: SSA's Friendly Visitor program matches seniors with members of the community with the goal of relieving loneliness for seniors who don't have family or friends in the area. If you would like to make a difference in a senior's life, volunteer to be a friendly visitor. The time commitment is once a week for about an hour. You can email friendlyvisitor@seniorservicesalex.org or call 703-836-4414, ext 20.

Meals on Wheels Volunteers: SSA is now delivering meals to Alexandria seniors 7 days a week! We are looking for volunteers to deliver meals on weekdays, Saturdays,Sundays. For more information on time requirements, etc. contact SSA at 703-836-4412, ext 12. or email mealsonwheels@seniorservicesalex.org.
